A new school year

September 1st I started kindergarten again. There's 17 of us in the class, and we have 2 teachers who take turns teaching us. The first day I didn't want to let go of mama, but now I'm happily going into the classroom in the morning.

Lukas is doing great at daycare, he has a really nice lady taking care of him there everyday and he is enjoying it a lot. He has 2 teeth and is crawling paracommando-style very fast now. He's a good eater and a good sleeper (except when he is teething...). Since about a week we share a bedroom and it's going very well. Most nights we both sleep through the night (and mummy too!).

Papa's school didn't start yet, so he is taking an intensive Dutch language course.

Mama is working again since the end of April, and she seems to be enjoying it. She can work from home one day per week, which is really nice because then she can bring/fetch me from school. Other days I will have to go to daycare in the morning and/or evening.

Yuram Lukas is 2 months old today

It's been 2 months already since Yuram Lukas was born. I'm still a little bit jealous sometimes, but I'm getting used to sharing my parents with him.

Yesterday we both had a check-up at the Child & Family service. Yuram Lukas also had to get his first vaccinations, the poor boy. He's been growing really well, weighing 6,330 kg and measuring 61 cm. Mummy is very happy that he sleeps so well at night, she usually only needs to feed him once or twice during the night.

I'm weighing almost 14 kg and measuring 93 cm. I enjoy going to school 4,5 days a week and I have learned so many new words since I started school. I also learned how to scream really loud and to kick, but mummy doesn't seem to appreciate my achievements... Every week we do activities around a certain theme. During health week we had a breakfast at school and we learned about healthy eating habits etc. Not all themes are so serious of course, we also had an elephant week (I brought my stuffed elephant to school that week), Bob the Builder week (we made our own tools!) and this week we have little chicks in the classroom. Today I could even bring two little chickens home for one night!

Daddy is very busy for school, but I get to see him more during the weekends. Mummy is still home on maternity leave, so she can bring me and fetch me from school every day.

I finally have a baby brother!

Today mummy gave birth to my baby brother Yuram Lukas. He weighed 3.6 kg and measured 52.5 cm at birth - almost as big as I was ;-)

Oma and opa took me to see him this afternoon, but I fell asleep on the way to the hospital...

I've been going to school for several days now, and according to the teacher I'm doing really well. I do cry a little bit when mummy drops me off in the morning, but that's over pretty quickly. I've been using the small toilet just like the other kids, so maybe I'll be able to go to school without diapers soon.

As for mummy, she's STILL walking around with a big belly. It seems the baby doesn't want to come out and play with me?!? Hopefully he won't wait much longer, we're all waiting impatiently to meet him!

Today was my first day of school! I'm exactly 30 months old today, that's the minimum age to enter kindergarten in Belgium.

I was so happy to see so many kids after spending 2 weeks at home, and I was so busy playing in the classroom with the sand, I didn't mind at all when mummy left. Hopefully I will still be as happy when she comes to fetch me this afternoon!

Almost Christmas

Hi everyone,

It's almost Christmas again and mummy has been very busy the past year.
In april we moved to a house in the same village as where oma and opa live, so I can still see them a lot. Daddy became a student again and is going to Brussels everyday for classes. Mummy will be home from work for a while, as she will be taking care of my little brother or sister due in a couple of weeks.

And I will start kindergarten after the Christmas holidays, tomorrow will be my last day in daycare already!

Maybe now that mummy is home for a while, she will have more time to update this blog...

Lots of changes

Mummy was so busy recently that she didn't have much time to update this blog. But you can find lots of pictures and videos on my dropshots website ;-)

I started going to daycare last month, at first just a few hours a day, and now I am going full-time 4 days a week. On Wednesdays my grandparents take care of me.
Mummy started working on March 1st, so I really enjoy spending more time with her on the weekends. And we're waiting impatiently for daddy to come from Korea, he will move here end of March or beginning of April. Mummy already rented a house for us to live in, not too far from opa and oma's house. We're waiting for daddy to arrive before moving in.

February 17th was Chinese/Korean New Year, and oma's brother came from Brazil, so we had a big family celebration.

The last 2 weeks of February auntie May and Dongeun came to visit us from Sweden. I enjoyed their company so much and miss them a lot. I often go to check the room they stayed in, but they're never there :-(

18 months!

Today I'm 18 months old already. I haven't gained much weight these last few months (still about 12,5 kg) but I did grow taller (about 84 cm). On my first birthday I could take a few steps, but now I can walk, run and even jump. I can eat with a fork or spoon by myself, but I will still eat with my hands if it takes too long. I can drink from a cup without spilling too much. I can make a 10-piece wooden puzzle, build towers with my Duplo blocks and I love to have books read to me. I also really enjoy watching pictures of the people I know and saying their names.

I can say the names of most people around me, be it in a shortened form for some difficult names. I can also say more and more words, mostly Dutch or Chinese as I don't hear a lot of Korean with daddy still in Korea (but mummy reads to me in Korean sometimes, and I watch a Korean children's DVD too).

Some of the names I say: mama, papa, oma (grandmother), opa (grandfather), klee/gee (tante Kathleen), ta-te (tante), ko-ko (taikong & taipo), e-li (Eric), a-yi (Alix), ko (komo-Korean for aunt), onnu (onni-Korean for older sister/niece), haaa (halmoni-Korean for grandmother), haboji (haraboji-Korean for grandfather), and my favorite one: Bumba (a clown from a childrens's programme).

Other words: o-ta (opta-Korean for finished, gone), pipi (pee pee & potty), kaka (both for poo poo and diaper), appu (apples and other round fruits), pee (pear and banana), auto (cars, trains etc.), baw (ball), denden (light in Chinese), vish (vis-fish), namnam (food, eating), tiktak (clock), baby, and a word I started using a lot these days: NEEN (NO).

I understand a lot more than I say, I can show where my hair, ears, mouth, nose, eyes, hands and feet are if asked in Chinese or Dutch (daddy, come quickly to teach me in Korean too ;-) )

What I'm not so good at: sleeping through the night and giving up mummy's milk...

Right after we arrived in Belgium, mummy bought me a pretty red potty. I've been sitting on it once or twice a day since then, but I didn't realise what it was for until the day of Sinterklaas. All I did was pee a bit in it, but as it seems to make everyone in the house so happy, I've been doing it more often - about once every 1-2 days. Mummy thinks it's too early to start real potty training, so she'll just keep putting me on it mornings and evenings for the time being.

December 6th is an important day for children in Belgium and neighbouring countries, because Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) brings toys and sweets for all children who were good during the past year. I guess I have been very good, check out all the stuff I got!

In the afternoon we went to mummy's aunts home and had pancakes, yummie! There were some other relatives too, I especially liked Alixe who played with me a lot :-)

Brugge & Sealife

Today my godparents aunt Kathleen and Eric brought us to Brugge (in the rain, I guess I'd better get used to the nice Belgian weather...) and to Sealife in Blankenberge. At Sealife we saw sealions, seals, otters, penguins and lots of fish.

Today haraboji, harmoni, Gahyun and her father brought us to the airport (daddy had to work and couldn't come to the airport with us). After a last Korean meal we boarded the Korean Air flight to Paris. We were very lucky, because daddy had a lot of mileage, he could buy a business class ticket for mummy. And they even kept the seat next to hers free, so I had a whole huge seat to myself! Mummy said the food was a lot better than in economy, but I preferred mummy's milk ;-)

When we got to Paris, opa and auntie Kathleen were waiting for us and we drove straight home to oma.

6 weeks Korea

Mummy and I spent the last 6 weeks in Korea with daddy. We enjoyed going to the seaside together, and visited my Korean family a couple of times. Tomorrow we will fly back to Belgium, where mummy will look for a job. Daddy will join us in March next year.

Today we went to Ikea, a big Swedish furniture store (I think mummy took me to the same store in Belgium too ).

I really liked the big round bed, while Dong-Eun slept in her pram.

We went there by bus and tram, and on the way back the pram was filled with our shopping and Dong-Eun was sleeping in a carrier with her daddy. None of the adults thought it was necessary to fix the pram to the bus, so when the bus took a sharp turn, the pram went upside down and all the shopping fell out. The people on the bus and the driver were all very shocked at first, they thought Dong-Eun was in the pram...

We took the train to the airport, and then we had a direct flight to Gothenburg. Uncle Choi was waiting for us at the (tiny) airport there, and drove us to their house in his (tiny) car.

I love playing outside, if someone leaves the door open I will quickly try to escape from the house! I enjoy playing with the grass, pulling it out and chewing it, picking flowers, and if I run too fast and lose my balance, it's very soft to fall down.

Today mummy took me to the zoo, where we met other kids around my age (and their mummies & older siblings). I enjoyed looking at all the big animals, but was most excited in the goat park where we could enter and play with the goats! I wasn't afraid at all and followed them around and touched them. Mummy had trouble getting me back in my buggy, I wanted to keep playing with the goats.
I was also very happy to see my friend Flynn again, on the picture I'm playing with his shoes, hihi.

Mummy brought me to Belgium and we're staying with my 'opa' and 'oma' (grandfather/grandmother) now. Mummy said the weather would be more comfortable than in Korea, but she lied to me! It's been soooo hot ever since we arrived, even opa's lawn became completely yellow.

My first birthday!

Today was my first birthday! In the morning we went to a photo studio to get my pictures taken, and then daddy drove us to Suwon where we celebrated with my Korean relatives. I also got to pick one thing from the table which had a notebook, pencil, thread, money. I chose the pencil, which means that I will become a scholar... we'll see!

In one year I grew about 26 cm (from 54 to 80 cm), gained 8.4 kg (from 3.6 to 12 kg), and got 8 teeth. I can crawl very fast and I can walk a few meters now, I can say mama, papa and dada (= mummy, daddy & bye-bye in dutch). I can clap my hands, wave bye-bye and give wet kisses. When mummy or daddy tell me I shouldn't do something, I laugh, and the louder they say it the louder I laugh. I can climb on to sofa's and low coffee tables and get down by myself. I love to open all the cabinets and take things out and putting other things into them. I also like to switch off the tv, the dishwasher, and especially the computer while mummy is using it. I eat most foods in small amounts, but I still have a strong preference for mummy's milk.

This weekend we went to Geoje-do, a peninsula southwest of Busan. The seaside is very beautiful and there are many small islands along the coast.
During lunch mummy gave me some of her rice, fish and tofu, and I enjoyed it so much! I like grown-up food much better than the mashed and pureed stuff mummy tries to give me ;-)

Today is a national holiday in Korea, so daddy didn't have to work and could take us to Haeundae beach in Busan. It was quite windy, but it was nice to be out and enjoy the sea breeze.

Today we went to Kangjin for a wedding of one of daddy's cousins. Kangjin is quite far from Ulsan, so yesterday we first drove to Gwangju which is the biggest city near Kangjin. One of my aunts lives there, so we had dinner together with my aunt and several other family members that had come to Gwangju on their way to the wedding.

The next morning all of us got into daddy's big car and we drove to Kangjin. Kangjin is the hometown of my grandparents, it was the first time for me to visit there. After the wedding we visited the graves of granddad's ancestors. The small hill behind us is the grave of my greatgrandfather.

On our way home to Ulsan we passed Boseong, which is famous (at least in Korea ;-) ) for its green tea fields. We stopped at one of the fields and we had some green tea (yes, daddy let me try some too!) and took some pictures in the field.

Jeju - part 2

Me all dressed up to attend the wedding! Daddy and another colleague who flew to Jeju to attend the wedding didn't bring their invitations, so they didn't know where the wedding was taking place. They only remembered it started around 12h30, so they decided to go for a drive around Halla mountain together, and they would call another colleague during the morning to find out where the wedding was.
On the right is a picture of mummy & daddy with Halla mountain in the background, still covered in snow (I was asleep during most of the drive, so I'm not in the picture, I didn't even see the mountain!)
At 11 o'clock they found out the wedding was at 11h30... We still made it in time to have lunch there, and daddy was early enough to be in the official wedding picture with all of the groom's friends and colleagues.
After the wedding we drove around for a couple of hours and did some more sightseeing, before heading to the airport and flying back home to Ulsan. It was so nice to go on a trip with mummy and daddy, I hope they will take me on many more!

Jeju - day 1

We went to Jeju island to attend the wedding of one of daddy's colleagues/friends. Jeju lies south of the Korean peninsula and is semi-tropical... but as it's still winter, the weather was still quite cold and we could still see snow in the mountain areas. We had to take a plane to get there, and this time I almost didn't cry... Only when we were approaching the airport and my ears hurt I cried a bit. We drove around a lot in the car that daddy rented, and I was very comfortable in my own car seat. Car seats are not so common yet in Korea, but mummy really doesn't like it when I am 'loose' in the car, so she insisted we bring along my car seat.

During the weekends I get to spend some more time with daddy, which we both enjoy! On weekdays he is so busy he often comes home after my bed time, so I only get to play with him a few minutes in the morning if I get up early enough, and if he's home early, for a little while in the evening.

We visited Cheonjiyeon waterfalls in Seogwipo (south part of the island) which was really beautiful, and we could see the first blossoms this year. There were quite a lot of tourists there for this time of year, both Koreans and Taiwanese.

Daddy thought Jeju is a bit similar to Hokkaido (northern island of Japan), except the vegetation of course (no palm trees in Hokkaido!). I hope they will take me to Hokkaido once, it's the place where mummy & daddy met each other.

On the left is a picture of daddy and me with a typical Jeju statue. Jeju is a volcanic island (non-active) and it's full of black rock. They use it to make statues, walls, houses, there are rocks everywhere you look! We bought a couple of statues as souvenir, they are a little bit smaller than the one on the picture though ;-)

We drove along the south & east coast of Jeju, stopping a couple of times along the way to take some pictures and pick up some stones for my greatgrandfather's collection. I didn't see everything though, as I was asleep in the car a lot of the time ;-)

On the right is a picture of mummy and me in a flower field. There were several fields like this in that area for which you had to pay to enter & take pictures, but daddy found one that was free :-)

Sometimes mummy gives me a special baby rice cracker, so I can practice eating by myself. Eating a cracker is much more fun than getting fruit puree or mashed vegetables stuffed into my mouth! This cracker was so small, I finished it in no time... or did I?

Kahyeon's birthday party

Today mummy and me flew to Seoul so we could attend my cousin Kahyeon's first birthday party! The party was very nice, Kahyeon was wearing a very cute dress, and her mummy was wearing a beautiful Korean hanbok. There were so many people, a lot of nice food (I only got to taste some fruits though), there was a video film about Kahyeon, a photographer, a cameraman... Too bad daddy couldn't make it!
Mummy doesn't have any pictures to post here, maybe auntie Yangja can send mummy some? ;-)

Today it snowed in Ulsan! Mummy was taking pictures from the balcony, and I was watching her & pressing my face against the window.

Look at me go! Now mummy has to keep an eye on me at all times, because I like to grab (and eat!) everything I can reach... I'm especially fond of electrical cords and my daddy's shoe laces :-)

Happy (lunar) New Year!

Today is New Year again! Both my Korean and Chinese relatives celebrate the lunar New Year today, we spent the holidays in Suwon with daddy's family. On the first day of the New Year younger generations bow for the elder relatives and wish them a Happy New Year, and in return they tell us their wishes for the coming year (and some money ;-) ). My cousin Kahyeon and I wore our traditional Korean 'hanbok', aren't we cute?

Daddy had some business to take care of in Seoul, so mummy and I joined him and met auntie May, mummy's Korean teachers and Ritsu-kun with his parents. Ritsu-kun didn't seem to be very interested in me, only in the big wheels of my stroller :-)
